It is with great pleasure that the board of the association Schloss Zerbst e. V. announces that the grant decision for the realization of the major project "Implementation of the Cultural Use Concept" arrived on July 10, 2020. This donation is a major milestone in the voluntary work of the Förderverein and the preservation of Zerbst Castle for future generations.

The project has a total volume of ? 2,405,611.00 with a grant of ? 2,078,629.87. The project period extends from July 2020 to March 2022.

The funding is provided by CLLD / LEADER within the framework of the programme "Saxony-Anhalt CULTURAL HERITAGE" in accordance with the Directive on the granting of grants to promote investments to improve the presentation and sustainable use of cultural heritage in the state of Saxony-Anhalt (Cultural Heritage ERDF Directive). The funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is the Investitionsbank Sachsen-Anhalt.

It was a very long, rocky road until the decision arrived, but the club board acted purposefully and persistently. The project registration with the Local Action Group "Middle Elbe-Fläming" took place in July 2017, the application to the Investment Bank in February 2018. The preparation of the complex application, which was modified several times, was extremely labor-intensive. A large number of documents had to be created and taught. Most of the time finally took up the required EU-wide tender for the planning services and the preparation of the planning documents for examination by the state authority BLSA.

The development and use concept for the castle, which the city councillors unanimously adopted at the city council meeting on 30 January 2019, forms the decisive basis for this major project. The realization of this project is of particular importance from two points of view. The implementation of the fire protection concept required by the building regulations office of the district is a decisive basis for keeping the castle with its exhibitions open and offering events. In addition, only funding applications that necessarily imply accessibility will now be approved. This is currently not the case at all in the castle and cannot be achieved even with small measures. After the implementation of the current project, the castle will be barrier-free.

For the committed, solution-oriented support, the board of the local action group "Middle Elbe-Fläming", in particular Mrs. Kurzke from the LEADER management, would like to thank very much. The same heartfelt thanks go to the city of Zerbst/Anhalt as the owner of the castle, in particular to the mayor Mr. Dittmann and the castle committee, for the help and especially for the implementation of the EU-wide tender for the planning services.

We would also like to thank Bau-Consult Hermsdorf and the engineering office Kunhart Wasserleben as well as the employees of the Investitionsbank Sachsen-Anhalt for the very pleasant cooperation with the goal in mind.

The major project begins with the preparation of the building applications and other necessary applications, followed by the tenders. If all permits and tenders corresponding to the approved amounts have been received, construction work can begin at the end of this year.

The project of the "implementation of the cultural usage concept" in Zerbst Castle consists of three linked components. These include the realization of the fire protection concept, the production of the final ceiling with roof above the central risalit and the construction of an elevator with the connection of all floors of the castle.

The concept for the implementation of the fire protection concept includes structural measures and technical equipment as well as ancillary construction costs. Three new exterior doors and numerous fire doors as well as two fire protection walls to seal off the three staircases will bemanufactured and installed inside. In addition, two new escape route exits to the castle courtyardwill be realized. The fire doors to be installed on the ground floor are self-closing in the event of a fire, so that accessibility is guaranteed in event and exhibition operation. Furthermore, structuralsafeguards aremade at the exit of the central risalit and provisionally closed window openings are restored. In addition, fire extinguishers, emergency lighting in the stairwells and various levels, escape route pictograms and a house alarm system must be installed.

The new final ceiling with roof will be built above the second floor of the central risalit to make the rooms and areas below usable. Before the new ceiling is erected, the main cornices and dilapidated emergency ceilings with their unnatural concrete beams must be demolished and the balustrades, figures and vases that are at risk of falling must be removed and secured. Thereafter, a reinforced concrete ceiling is installed over the entire area of the central risalit, with the exception of the staircase. At the same time, the two main cornices connected to the ceiling on the courtyard and garden sides are being reconstructed. In the next step, the two staircases are to be led back to the roof level and the defects of the two cross-ridge vaults are to be supplemented. The conclusion is the production of a durable roof with trapezoidal sheet metal cover.

The construction of an elevator to create barrier-free access to all castle floors is only possible in the northwestern part of the castle for technological and monument protection reasons. With regard to the installation of new ceilings and their final sealing by means of a permanent roof, the elevator is connected to all the castle floors. The elevator to be built not only provides access to all floors of the castle, but also ensures barrier-free access from the castle courtyard and the path on the north side, which is about six meters lower. The ceiling work to be realized concentrates on the two upper floors of the main wing. In addition, the extension of the already realized escape route staircase from the second floor to the roof level and the roof closure itselfwill be realized. Furthermore, the connection of all floors to the new elevator must be established.

With the implementation of the three components of the cultural usage concept in Zerbst Castle, the commissioning of all restored castle rooms and their cultural use as well as above all the dangerous and barrier-free access for all visitor groups are given. In addition, other areas of the listed building, which is important in terms of art and cultural history, are preserved, which contributes significantly to the regional identity. Founded in 2003, the exclusively voluntary Förderverein Schloss Zerbst e. V. succeeded in transforming the castle from a complete ruin into an important cultural site of the city and the region as well as a supra-regional tourist attraction within 17 years of active action. The measures described above, which can now be implemented, build on this and the offers will be furtherdevelopedin atargeted manner on the basis of this.
